POPCOM 3 invites youth to participate in World Population Day social media campaign

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – Commission on Population (POPCOM) calls on the youth in Central Luzon to be part of its social media campaign relative to the upcoming celebration of World Population Day (WPD) on July 11.

“Selfie Kabataan, Sali na Kabayan hopes to catch the attention of the youth, considering the popularity of the social media and the selfie phenomenon among adolescents,” POPCOM Regional Director Eleanor Cura said.

It was also introduced to heighten the awareness of the Filipinos, most especially from Central Luzon, regarding issues directly and indirectly related to the rapid increase in the global population.

“But beyond that, the campaign would also like to hear what our young people have to say on how they can help promote education, health and employment rights for the youth by protecting them from youth-related reproductive health issues,” Cura added.

Interested participants must be teenagers and must like POPCOM Region III’s Facebook fan page (facebook.com/POPCOM3).

“Teenagers must take a selfie with their answer on how they can protect themselves from youth issues and concerns such as high teenage pregnancies, rising early sexual encounters, increasing cases of sexually transmitted infections including HIV-AIDS, risky sexual and non-sexual behaviors, and early marriages, among others. These should be posted in our Facebook fan page,” Cura explained.

Moreover, entries must bear the hashtags #worldpopulationday, #investinginteenagegirls, and #popcomregion3.

Deadline for submission is on July 11.

Five entries with the most number of likes will be declared as winners at the end of the campaign and will each receive Php1,000 worth of gift certificates.

This year’s WPD carries the theme “Investing in Teenage Girls” which aims to combat the increased incidences of premarital sex and teenage pregnancy in the region./CLJD/MJLS-PIA 3
